Find the area of right triangles, other triangles, special quadrilaterals, and polygons by composing into rectangles or decomposing into triangles and other shapes; apply these techniques in the context of solving real-world and mathematical problems.
Objectives:
Students will gain the understanding of spatial awareness necessary for identifying the relationship between different polygons and their areas by being able to come up with a functional definition of area with 80% accuracy or high.

    • The students will add to their IMNB a glossary of shapes which will be added to as the unit goes on.
  • Students will draw a shape to cover a plane using 2 different shape which take up the same amount of space.
    • Students will show their responses to their partner to see if it would work.
Learning Segment 2
Activity:   Collaborative   Time:   25   mins
  • What takes up more space
    • The students will be given either Pattern A or B and asked to check which of the shapes take up the most space.
    • They will need to deconstruct and reconstruct each shape to see which of the three shapes take up the most space.
