Standard: 6.G.A.1 Find the area of right triangles, other triangles, special quadrilaterals, and polygons by composing into rectangles or decomposing into triangles and other shapes; apply these techniques in the context of solving real-world and mathematical problems.
Objectives: Students will gain the understanding of spatial awareness necessary for identifying the relationship between different polygons and their areas by being able to come up with a functional definition of area with 80% accuracy or high.

Learning Segment 1 Activity:   Direct    Time:   25   mins IMNB The students will add to their IMNB a glossary of shapes which will be added to as the unit goes on. Students will draw a shape to cover a plane using 2 different shape which take up the same amount of space. Students will show their responses to their partner to see if it would work.

Learning Segment 2 Activity:   Collaborative   Time:   25   mins What takes up more space The students will be given either Pattern A or B and asked to check which of the shapes take up the most space. They will need to deconstruct and reconstruct each shape to see which of the three shapes take up the most space.
